Happy 50th Birthday Dodge Charger
The 1960’s in the United States were known as the age of the Muscle Cars: midsize and lightweight cars featuring high-performance engines.During the first half of this decade only very few Supercars – a former term used before Muscle Cars became popular – had already been available on the Market and the Dodge brand’s dealers started to complain about the lack of a vehicle which could compete with these beautiful and powerful cars.
In the Dodge lineup at that time there were already high-performing cars, such as the Coronet.
This model was available with very powerful engines but it featured a more classical look, which could not compete with the curvy and sporty lines of the new Muscle Cars. Burt Bouwkamp, Chief Engineer for Dodge during the 60’s, was then requested to create the Brand’s first muscle car, in order to fulfill the requests of the Brand’s dealers.
It was 1965 when the Charger concept was presented in car shows around the States with the aim to evaluate the Market’s interest toward such a concept vehicle.
The response was overwhelmingly positive and the History of the Dodge Charger would begin one year later with the first B-Body model.
The Dodge Charger is currently in its 7th generation, and is still known as the fastest sedan in the world due to the great performances of its top model: The Dodge Charger Hellcat.
We want to wish Happy Birthday to our beloved Charger with this gallery of historical photos, representing all the generations of this iconic American muscle car.
