Stellantis, Dodge’s parent company, announced the launch of their final Charger and Challenger models in 2023. These two lineups are well-favored all-American muscle cars worldwide, which makes many car enthusiasts wonder about this decision. Keep reading as we reveal the reason why Dodge discontinued the Charger and Challenger!

Why Are The Dodge Charger And Challenger Discontinued?

The main reason that Stellantis discontinued these two legendary lineups is its transition to EVs. As governments are encouraging automakers to go green with electric cars, many companies, including Stellantis, are under political pressure to embrace this change.

Adding to this pressure are the environmental concerns and the market trends. The automobile industry is embracing electrification, and automakers will be left in the dust if they don’t hop on the bandwagon. That’s why the brand put an end to the Dodge Charger and Challengers gas-powered muscle cars, shifting toward electric models.

In fact, Stellantis invested over $406 million in three Michigan factories in 2024 in its attempt to adopt electrification. According to Reuters, the company has also recently poured $41 million into an Italy-based plant to manufacture EV parts.

The Last Call: The Last Dodge Charger And Challenger Model

Stellantis released the Last Call models in 2023 to pay homage to the two discontinued beloved muscle cars. They boast bold, edgy yet retro and nostalgic exteriors, with powerful engines that pump out tons of torque. These limited editions include Dodge Challenger Shakedown, Dodge Challenger Black Ghost, Dodge Charger King Daytona, Dodge Charger Super Bee, and Dodge Challenger & Charger Scat Pack.

If you want to have a taste of those American legends, these Last Call special edition models will give you a glimpse into automotive history.

Are There Any Alternative For These Models?

Dodge Hornet is a great stand-in for the discontinued gas-powered counterparts. The muscle element is still in its bloodline but with an electrification twist. This all-electric car can deliver the power and speed that live up to the traditional gas-powered muscle cars.

Being considered the muscle in the SUV segment, the Dodge Durangos are also affordable alternatives. Although they don’t quite match the Chargers and Challengers in terms of raw muscle, these SUVs still inherit the Dodge performance.

Will They Return In The Future?

Dodge has recently hinted at the return of these legends on social media, so we can expect these muscular beasts to roar on the road again in the near future. In particular, the next-gen Dodge Charger Daytona is said to deliver a whopping 670 HP with sleek styling, and this electric muscle car continues to become the world’s most powerful muscle car.

Stellantis’s CEO, Carlos Tavares, also shared about the major challenge of producing EVs, which is to balance the cost and profit [The Street]. It’s hard to make a profit from electric vehicles if automakers target middle-class customers since they’re quite reluctant about the price. That’s why gas-powered cars like Charger and Challenger still hold a place in their hearts. Therefore, these two American muscle cars lineups are believed to come back soon.
