5 RAM 1500 Years To Avoid
If you’re looking for reliable trucks, steer clear of the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500, as well as the 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019 RAM 1500. These models are plagued by problems in critical components, like engines, steering, braking, airbags, electrical systems, and fuel systems.
Note: Since 2009, Chrysler, the then-parent company, has separated Dodge and RAM into two individual lineups. So, post-2009 models are only labeled RAM 1500, not Dodge RAM 1500.
2003 Dodge RAM 1500
With 1,355 complaints and 12 recalls registered on the NHTSA as of 2025, the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 has unfortunately become a poster child for avoidable mechanical failures and critical safety oversights.
Airbag issues dominate the list, with over 400 complaints, many involving non-deployment during crashes. In humid regions, the passenger airbag inflator can rupture, turning a safety feature into a hazard. In one report, after a 40–50 MPH collision, the airbags failed to deploy, leaving the driver with facial fractures. Another incident involved a rollover at 50 MPH, again, no airbag deployment. Multiple passengers were injured, one even being ejected from the vehicle.
Structural rust is another widespread problem. Numerous reports describe frames so corroded that dealership lifts punctured through them. In some cases, the gas tank detached from the chassis, forcing emergency repairs. One owner described having to physically hold the gas nozzle at an angle to avoid fuel spills due to corrosion around the filler area.
The dashboard is another weak point, with widespread cracking and sharp plastic fragments posing injury risks during hard braking or accidents. Owners have reported lacerations from these shards, even during minor interior contact.
As for drivetrain issues, the rear differential and driveshaft are common failure points. Responders noted a sheared axle due to a failed differential. Dodge has yet to formally recall the affected vehicles despite thousands of online complaints.
2014 RAM 1500
As of 2025, the NHTSA has logged 1,551 complaints and 17 recalls for the 2014 RAM 1500, with recurring issues involving steering failures, engine issues, and critical electrical malfunctions.
Power steering problems are among the most serious. Multiple drivers report total steering loss, sometimes at highway speeds. One account describes a crash into a guardrail at 45–50 MPH on a curvy road due to a sudden loss of steering.
In our experience, a similar issue occurred while backing out of a parking spot. The steering froze, a warning light appeared, and the dealership later quoted $4,500 for rack-and-pinion repairs. Strangely, although a recall exists for similar systems (Recall VB9), some affected VINs are excluded, leaving many owners without support.
Engine failures are another major red flag. Owners have reported blown head gaskets, coolant leaks through the tailpipe, and even full engine fires. One driver’s 5.7L Hemi caught fire at 60 MPH after overheating and emitting smoke, despite no prior warning signs.

2015 RAM 1500
Up to now, the NHTSA has recorded 1,275 complaints and 18 recalls for the 2015 RAM 1500, marking it as a truck that requires closer scrutiny beyond its rugged looks.
Although steering, electrical system, and engine failures remain top concerns (with documented crash incidents), the fuel/propulsion system presents a growing safety risk. Owners have reported corroded fuel tank strap mounts leading to the tank detaching or nearly dragging on the road. In one case, we witnessed firsthand how a dislodged strap caused the fuel tank to grind against the spinning driveshaft, throwing sparks within inches of the tank. This terrifying situation was worsened by the absence of a related recall for this model year.
Other common issues include faulty fuel level sensors, leading to inaccurate readings and unpredictable fuel shortages. Some trucks drop from “full” to “empty” within 40 miles, leaving drivers guessing their remaining range.
The transmission system shows significant wear around 100,000 miles. Complaints cite broken tone wheels and failed crankshaft sensors, often accompanied by P0336 error codes and engine stalls in traffic, placing drivers in potentially dangerous situations.
Finally, the braking system, especially the ABS control module, has caused major frustrations. With parts on extended backorder or engineering hold, many trucks are undrivable, and owners are stuck without a timeline for repair.
2016 RAM 1500
With 1,278 complaints and 17 recalls recorded on NHTSA (as of 2025), this truck year remains a cautionary tale for used buyers hoping for durability without surprises. The 2016 RAM 1500 carries over many of the reliability concerns that plagued earlier models.
Additionally, one of the most alarming issues is the loss of power steering, often without warning. Dozens of owners report sudden steering failure at highway speeds or during tight maneuvers, accompanied by dashboard lights for EPS or traction control. In one instance, while entering a turn into a crowded parking lot, our truck’s steering locked up at 15 MPH, nearly causing a collision. Restarting the engine temporarily restored function, but the warning returned later. Diagnostic scans showed code C2128, and repairs were estimated at $3,500, yet the truck was not covered under existing recalls.
ABS module failures are widespread and dangerous. With warning lights illuminated and cruise control disabled, many owners are forced to drive without working traction or anti-lock brakes. Replacement modules are backordered indefinitely, leaving trucks on the road with diminished safety.
Transmission failures have triggered four separate recalls. From faulty BTSI pins allowing unintentional gear shifts to differentials locking up mid-drive, these reliability issues create real crash potential. One of the most widely reported issues stems from the Mobile Generator Unit (MGU), a core part of the truck’s eTorque system. When it fails, the truck can become completely inoperable, leaving owners stranded. In our case, a warning chimed as the RAM truck attempted to accelerate onto an expressway without warning, the rotary shifter jumped from “Drive” to “Park,” nearly stalling us in traffic. Dealerships confirm the failure, but repairs are often impossible due to part shortages and backorders, with over 3,000 trucks reportedly waiting for MGU replacements.
Power steering failure is another serious concern. Dozens of owners report sudden stiffening of the wheel mid-turn or upon startup, often paired with a “Power Steering Unavailable” message. While the issue mirrors a previous recall, many affected trucks are not covered, forcing owners to shoulder high repair costs for a critical safety feature.
Structurally, the rear window frame is prone to cracking and water leaks, soaking the rear seats and raising mold concerns. Some owners even reported the rear glass spontaneously shattering, which was a terrifying event, especially with passengers.
